The Winter Wander pant is fantastic. The stretch is just right and the fabric weight is perfect. It is the heaviest of the softshell pants that I own. The best part about its weight is that it keeps you warm but not hot while you work out in the cold. When the weather gets a bit nicer you don’t end up overheating too fast. The weight of the fabric also keeps it from showing wrinkles and static cling that lighter pants sometimes do. This would only be an issue if you wear them for work like I often do. They style is great too because instead of being a real technical pant with zippers and pockets and synch cords everywhere, they can pass for work pants and nobody takes a second look. This passing for work pants is my favorite feature and in my opinion not enough softshell pants can do this. If they had come in khaki I would have gotten several pairs. The water shedding feature of these pants is great. I have yet to wear them in a downpour but the light rain and wet snow just sheds right off. Mountain Hardware please make more just like this!

Due to the nature of my life I may be called either to the hospital to attend a patient or for mountain rescue. I can happily wear these either direction. They are a comfortable tough functional pant in traditional styling with useful pockets. I have only had them a couple of weeks, but they are superb for cool weather climbing and hiking, and reasonably cold weather with long underwear other, but flexible and properly fitted enough for for technical climbing. They seem to repel dirt and water well, and protect me from branches and edges. Well made, well designed. I am 5-10 145 lb and a medium fits me well.
I would recommend this product.

Didn't cut the mustard

These pants looked good on paper, but once you take them outside in the wind, you realize that despite being thick, the wind just goes through these things like nothing. They miss a wind breaker layer. I used these for biking in the winter once, and my crutch got really cold. Too cold, to be honest.
Interestingly enough, I got much, much better served with the old "Hardwear Cloth" Canyon pants that I have. I have no idea why these pants are do good in the winter despite being just a backpacking pants, but they are. The new Matterhorn backing pants are just as good as well. So if you are looking for extra warm in the winter, you will be better served with the Matterhorn than these. I think this is because the fabric on the Matterhorn is knitted much more tighter and does a better job at blocking the wind. Thanks.

Great pant and wanted this to have excellent wind protection in cold weather, got it! Its a heavier weave stretch woven fabric adding wind resistance and extra, that's why I got it and is passed. Length is great at 6'3", but the waist is on the smaller side for a LRG under the sizing chart, but it works. All in all this does what I want to do for snowshoeing, late fall through early spring (little snow amounts) hiking and X-Country Skiing. Great pant!

Sizing

Great product, its just difficult to get the right size when when the waist is S,M, L etc instead of waist sizes. It would work if there was any give in the waist with an adjustable extension or some elastic. I love that fact that you offer short length as most off the rack pants do not fit me properly. I usually go with a small to make sure I have the correct lenght, with you product, I had to go with Large and Short.

Winter Wander pants

These are great pants. Just warm enough, plenty dry enough and very sturdy. They're great for just plain outdoor wear in the winter. Put some long johns on under them and they will keep you toasty warm even on the coldest day. I also wear them under my waders when winter fishing. A previous reviewer had said that the size chart was not accurate and I would totally agree with that. I'm a 34 x 30 in every pant I buy and I bought mediums based on the size chart and they were too small by a good couple inches. Did a no hassle return/exchange for the large.

Winter Wander is FLEXIBLE

A Bit Too Small

i used the sizing chart and got the medium regular, since i wear a size 33-34 x 32 in all my other pants. unfortunately when i tried them on they were just too tight though the waist. Although the chart says the medium fits 32-34, i would say the fit is actually much closer to 32 than it is to 34. Unfortunately i will be returning these, and may try the large size, since otherwise they were a great pair of pants. Not sure how waterproof they would be for a full day of snowboarding though...I'll rate them 2 stars for now, since the sizing was a bit off and i didn't get a chance to truly test them.

Best softshell pants

wore these pants for 2 weeks out in the woods, going through thick veg. it's durable, and warm enough. for your cooler days. perfect for standing around by a camp fire, or even a night out in town with these gucci pants.... had alot of compliments.

Excellent Pockets

I'm a fit person that needed a large. I expected large of 36-38" waist. The pants fit too tightly around the waist for comfort, and I'm 36-38. I'll have to ensure I don't gain any weight.
Quality is good. These appear to be excellent pants for Alaska's colder temps.
If I don't gain any weight, these should last for years as I trek through brush and scrape against granite boulders.
My thoughts are that they appear very light-weight for a winter pant. I'll write more when it is winter.

From conference rooms to lava tubes

So versatile, rugged, and sharp I'm buying a couple pairs this season. High stain and water repellency is great. I've worn these from the office and then straight out to a twilight hike or game of disc golf with buddies. Can't praise these enough. Good weight and just flat out sweet.

Just to warn you...I am going to sound like a Mountain Hardwear salesman here, but I am not. I have owned these pants for about 6 months and used them for some winter hikes and bike rides, but two days ago they got the real test. I climbed Mount Rainier with a friend and wore these the whole time. The conditions were questionable coming in, but ended up being pretty nice. I brought Goretex pants and never used them. The pants were windproof and kept my legs warm the entire time. The summit was about 15 degrees with a 20 mph wind. These pants kept me warm. On breaks I sat RIGHT ON THE SNOW in my pants and NOT ONCE got a wet spot!! I don't know how they do it! I could sit for 15 minutes in the snow and my butt would be dry and comfortable! It was crazy! I don't know about the review of them looking bad. They look fine to me, but they do look like athletic pants. Well...they are!!

I was hoping this pant would be like the Piero Pant and the only reason I bought it was because I am in love with the Piero pants and I wanted to get a black one.
This is not as cool as the Piero and is a bit awkward looking and doesn't fit the body very well. It is baggy and ugly.

Good pant, poor details

Overall, the pant fit well and I appreciate the sizing. The pant suits the intended purpose - alpine climbing in the Sierra Nevada. I appreciate the design - narrow cuffs at the ankles (Mountain Hardwear please take of this!) - and the stretch. My one complaint is that the snap button broke shortly after purchasing the pant. I've had this problem with other Mountain Hardwear pants as well. I'm curious why the snap closures on Mtn Hardwear pants can't be made more robust.

Winter Wander pants and Mounatin Hardware Servcie

This review addresses the Winter Wander pants and the service from Mountain Hardware, from whom I ordered the pants directly. Quick summary - 5 stars for both. I bought the pants in search of versatile pants that could handle 2 weeks in Northern and Eastern Europe in mid spring's unpredictable temps. I was looking for pants which were comfortable for hiking and walking, comfortable over a broad (but reasonable) temperature range, would slide nicely over long underwear, had some zip or locking pockets (to avoid pickpockets), were reasonably wind and water resistant, and would dry fairly quickly if they had to be hand washed. These pants excelled at everything I wanted. Service from MH was excellent - fast shipping and easy return. Only thing I would change: make waist slightly smaller for a given amount of butt and leg room. I could live in these pants, especially when traveling.

Great Cooler weather pants

I've found these fit really well, and love them for backpacking and other activities. On top of that they look good so they can fit the purpose of meeting buisness casual needs that I have.

Typical coastal Maine weather, started the hike on 20 deg clear and breezy day.
Destination, Mt. Waldow overnight, solo, 20# backpack with 40# sled. 1.5 mile assent with 1/4 mile 35 deg open slope to open summit. Pitch Trango 2 in 20 mph NW winds on the summit. Winds backing around to the SW, warming, and increasing to 25 mph overnight. Break camp at daybreak and descend in mixed precip. The Winter Wander pant was wind proof, well breathing and shed light freezing rain for 2 hours without wetting out or leaking. The fit is forgiving and has a good range of motion for a 5'7" 195 lb man. Lower leg cuff fit well with a gator. Worn with exp weight long jon.
These pants will be a standard for 3 season packing.

Don't be foold by TRUE sizing

I used the MH size chart for 34x30 and ordered the Med Short. I'm pretty true size on 34-30 and I'd say the cut off for Medium is 33 in waist. As for the inseam, short =28 inch inseam.
As other reviewers have indicated, there are no lower leg zippers for accommodating boots.
Sizing gets a one star.

Absolute Amazing!!

I love these pants, I've abused them for 12 months now and they simply take the abuse.
I'm an outdoor adventurer - mostly backpacking and off-trail excursions through the bush and up rivers/creeks.
I bought these pants initially for snowshoeing, but they've become daily wear because they're uber comfortable, the cargo pocket is perfect for holding a wallet and pocket knife, and they perform awesome in the backcountry.
They keep me warm and dry and provide excellent breath-ability and range of motion.

NIce, could use some improvements

The material is good, fabric is nice. Fit is ok, but it is terrible they are called Winterpants when I can't even wear them with my snow boots comfortably. It would be better if their was a zipper on the bottom allowing a larger (snow/winter) boot to fit in when needed. I think these pants are a better fit for early spring. The name Winter Wander is a bit misleading.

What I was looking for

i bought these to be an all around pant to go from office to snowshoe to ski slope. Tested rigorously in all phases and they did just that! Good wind protection, shed snow, stayed warm to high 20's without additional layers, never overheated. Also quite comfortable next to skin and to move in. Very versatile. I'm a fan of these pants.

Best pants I own! I normally wear a 28X28 in my jeans and I got the small and these are perfect! Just right on the length which is hard for me to find and the draw string around the ankles is nice to keep them from falling under some of the shoes I wear. I wear these pants almost everyday, they are great just to wear around the house or out and about. I have worn them in upwards of 70 F to 18 F and they always feel perfect. The snow and rain roll right off these things! I sat in thunder storm for 2 hours getting dumped on and stayed I even go running in them sometimes, no to heavy for a few mile jog but would not wear them in a race. The front pockets though do hang kind of "open" the snow was going right into them, but not to deep.

Winter Wader Pants

I wear a 34 waist and 32 length and I got the large regular. They are a bit too big for me. I may have to get a smaller size or at least a large short. The pockets on the back are hard to open and are not going to be used at all. The side pocket is very well placed and very easy to open. One of the two front pockets was partly sewn into the side pocket and so has less freedom of movement. Overall the pants are great and and are very comfortable. They have keep me warm and dry.

Amazing pants!

These are now my favorite winter pants. I love wearing them everywhere. My most recent adventure with these pants was in the Colorado rockies. I walked all day long in these pants up and down with a heavy pack in 18 to 36 inches of snow and came home dry as could be. Snow wouldn't stick to them and the fabric and cut made stepping over downed trees and climbing steep pitches a breeze. I also forgot my gaiters that day, so I cinched down the hem cord and didn't get a flake of snow down my boots all day! I don't know how I have gotten along without these pants before now.

Very durable and weather resistant pants! They are great for cooler weather activities. Perfect for both aerobic and stop and go activities. I've used them ice climbing, snowshoeing and hiking and they are wicked wind resistant. With a base layer, I've worn them in very exposed conditions at temps around 0 with 30 mph winds! On the flip side, they are breathable enough to wear biking and hiking in temps below 50. They are crazy durable as well, and have survived several butt slides in snow and ice. Highly recommend.

Awesome Pants

These pants are just what I was hoping for to wear this Fall. Perfect for early morning walks or hikes, completely windproof, and lightweight. Have not gotten on to the pull cord on the leg cuff yet, as I noticed how loose fitting they are around the ankles, shouldn't be a problem. Love the fabric, very durable. Looking forward to winter XC skiing and adding a baselayer for warmth.

I just rode 12 miles, at night, in the pouring rain through Boston traffic. Arrived mostly dry and still haven't taken them off. Just a great all around pant.
